dictionary는 단어의 뜻, 발음, 철자, 품사, 예문을 찾아보는 사전이다. 종이책 사전과 온라인 사전 모두에 쓸 수 있으며, 영어 수업에서 모르는 단어를 확인할 때 “Look it up in the dictionary”라고 말한다. 숙제 중 철자를 확인하거나, 시험 전 단어의 여러 뜻을 비교하거나, 도서관에서 bilingual dictionary를 찾는 장면에서 자주 나온다.

뉘앙스 한국어 ‘사전’과 비슷하지만 영어에서는 dictionary와 encyclopedia를 분명히 나눈다. dictionary는 단어 중심이고, encyclopedia는 주제와 지식 설명 중심이다. 또 미국 교실에서는 허용된 시험에서는 dictionary를 쓸 수 있지만, vocabulary quiz에서는 못 쓰는 식으로 규칙 안내에 자주 등장한다.

⚠️ 자주 틀리는 포인트

“search the dictionary”도 가능하지만 초급에서는 “look up a word in the dictionary”가 가장 자연스럽다. dictionary 앞에는 보통 a나 the를 붙인다. “I found the word on the dictionary”보다는 “in the dictionary”가 맞다. 온라인 사전을 말할 때도 “an online dictionary”라고 하며, 단어장 notebook을 dictionary라고 부르면 의미가 달라진다.
